VOLUNTEERING DURING COVID-19
Tips for Keeping Yourself, Volunteers, and Communities Safe
If you are interested in volunteering, start by looking close to home. Consider what you can do to best support your own family, friends and neighbors. Needs will vary and your response should always factor safety considerations as the top priority. Maintain social connections in safe ways. Connect virtually. Wave through care home windows. Phone those who are alone and take the time to chat. Sing to your neighbors from your porch steps. Hang your artwork in windows. Find ways to bring happiness to others during these stressful times.
When serving as a Community Volunteer, continue to ask yourself these essential questions:
Your safety and limiting the spread of the virus is of the utmost priority. If you answer yes to any of the above questions, your decision must be to stay at home.
If you are able to volunteer, check out ConnectFredericton.ca for current postings. As volunteer opportunities and safety precautions are assured, volunteer managers will post their current needs for support.
If you are not able to volunteer in person, consider volunteering virtually. Look for postings on ConnectFredericton.ca that you can fulfill from the comfort of your home. Or consider donating to support the many agencies delivering valuable services at this time of need.

When serving as a Community Volunteer, continue to ask yourself these essential questions:
- Am I feeling unwell?
- Do I identify with a group that has been advised to stay at home, possibly due to age, travel, possible exposure to the virus, or personal medical conditions?
- Have I been in contact with someone who is unwell or exposed to the virus?
- Have I recently returned from travelling and not completed 14 days of isolation?

TIPS WHEN VOLUNTEERING INFORMALLY
Don't automatically assume that a neighbor needs assistance. They may have a support system in place already.
You can let your neighbor know that you are able to assist them with shopping or errands by leaving them a note in their mailbox or at their door. In it, share your contact information.
Do not call at someone's home unannounced. Some people may be anxious to open the door if they are observing isolation, have a medical condition, or live alone.
Carefully consider any requests to assist, factoring in safety consideration for yourself and others.
If delivering goods, arrange for your neighbor to call their order direct to grocery stores or pharmacies and arrange payment. Avoid cash transactions so as to limit contact.
Most stores will provide curbside pick-up, loading directly into your vehicle.
When handling goods or medical supplies, wear clean gloves or sanitize your hands.
At drop off, ring their bell, leave the parcel at the door while not impeding opening of the door, and then step well away.
It is best not to leave a parcel unattended. If there is no answer, call or text them. If no answer, return at another time.
Smile, wave, chat, and always keep your distance.
If you determine later that you cannot honor your offer, check out community groups providing a similar service and provide that information to your neighbor.
